At the Musical Memories Foundation, we pride ourselves on bringing the joy of live music to seniors. Our CEO, Sheryl B., is always looking for new ways to enrich the lives of those in our community. Recently, she decided to expand our offerings by hiring a new musician.  A special performance was set for the residents of Villa Toscana Memory Care in Mountain View, CA,  to raise awareness in support of  “The Longest Day” on June 20th, fighting the darkness of Alzheimer’s. The event and set list and event were meticulously planned.

Fresh off the energy of a successful “Magic of Drums” Workshop led by our Chief Musical Officer, Ben Cooper, at the Age Well Senior Center South in Fremont, CA, Sheryl B. arrived at Villa Toscana buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Our dedicated dance ambassador, Dean Nissen, met Sheryl there and, together with the new musician, was poised to deliver a fun-filled musical performance with a touch of dance. But as the minutes ticked by, it became clear that things were not going according to plan.

The performance time arrived, the new musician was nowhere in sight.

Sheryl and Dean exchanged a look. They had a room full of residents eagerly awaiting a show, and they were a key performer short. Drawing on their past collaborations, including the vibrant senior ball at the Union City Ruggieri Center, they knew they had to pivot, and fast. In a moment of inspired improvisation, the planned musical performance transformed into an interactive dance party.

This was an exciting new venture for all of us. Even with their years of experience, Sheryl and Dean were hosting their very first dance celebration for the memory care community. Often, traditional ideas suggest that calmer music is most suitable for residents. We saw this as a beautiful opportunity to discover if more lively music could also create wonderful, happy moments.

What we discovered was a beautiful revelation. The residents of Villa Toscana didn’t just want gentle melodies; they wanted to move! Upbeat classics like “Surfin’ USA,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “The Twist” filled the room, and the energy was electric. The dance party was an instant sensation.

Every resident who could get up and dance was on their feet, grooving and singing along to the timeless tunes. For those with mobility challenges, the celebration was just as inclusive. Sheryl and Dean joyfully held the hands of residents in wheelchairs, sharing and spinning in the infectious rhythm. The smiles were constant, and some danced and sang to every single song, their enthusiasm a testament to the power of music and movement.

Dean Nissen, our Musical Memories hero!

With his expert guidance and amazing dance moves, he taught line dances and easy-to-follow steps, making sure everyone felt included and confident while we all danced the afternoon away. The engagement was palpable; every resident was immersed in the moment, their faces alight with joy, and memories were sparked and shared! We also owe a huge thank you to the incredible staff at Villa Toscana, whose flexibility,  support, and participation were instrumental in the event’s success.

This experience reinforced a core belief we hold at the Musical Memories Foundation: older adults, regardless of memory loss, dementia, or other health issues, have a deep desire to engage, connect, and experience joy. Social interaction and the simple warmth of human contact are powerful and necessary. While generalized information about memory care can be a starting point, it often fails to capture the vibrant spirit of the individuals.

What sets Musical Memories apart is our commitment to customizing and tailoring our programs to the unique needs and desires of the seniors we serve. We listen, we adapt, and we ensure that no one is left behind. The unexpected dance party at Villa Toscana is a perfect example of our philosophy in action. It reminded us that sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the ones you don’t plan.
